Grout Joint Volume Calculator

Joint linear footage and joint volume for a tiled area, and the sealer that volume actually takes, rather than the floor area.

Inputs

Range: 1–1,000,000

Length times width of the area to be cleaned.

Range: 1–120 in

Inches. Large-format tile has far less joint per square foot than a 4 in mosaic.

Range: 1–120 in

Inches, measured on the face.

Range: 0.0156–1 in

Inches. 1/8 in is 0.125. Check it with a feeler gauge rather than a tape.

Range: 0.0156–2 in

Inches. The depth the sealer can reach, not the full grout thickness.

Reading: what this result means for the job
A quart to a gallon of sealer. The joint length per square foot below is the figure that explains why: large-format tile has far less joint per foot than a mosaic, and the joint width decides the rest.
Applicability limit
The joint volume comes from the tile size and the joint width and depth entered, and it measures the joint, not the floor area. The sealer figure assumes the joint drinks to the depth entered and that no sealer is wasted on the tile face. This is a planning figure for the values entered, not a measured result. Coverage rates, product yields and application rates are properties of a specific product, applicator and substrate, and the label or data sheet for the product you are using always takes precedence over the default here. Cost covers the chemical only, at the price entered. It excludes labour, equipment, applicators, consumables, freight, storage, waste disposal and any over-pour that the allowance does not capture.

What to check

  • Measure the joint width with a feeler gauge, not from a drawing.
  • Confirm the sealer only has to reach a certain depth into the joint.
  • Check the coverage figure on the sealer data sheet against the pour time you can actually maintain.

Sealer is bought by volume and consumed by the joint, so a floor area figure is the wrong basis. Large format tile has far less joint per square foot than a mosaic, and the joint width decides more than the tile size does.
