Spill Absorbent Calculator

Absorbent needed for a spill of a given volume, and how many bags the response will fill.

Inputs

Range: 0.01–5,000 gal

Enter the measured quantity in the unit shown.

Range: 0.1–50 lb per gallon

From the absorbent data sheet. Clay, pad and polymer absorbents differ widely, and a viscous liquid is absorbed more slowly than water.

Range: 1–500 lb

Enter the measured or label value in the units shown.

Reading: what this result means for the job
A small spill that one person can contain with a small number of bags. Keep the absorbent, the bags and the disposal container together, because a spill kit that has to be assembled during a spill is not a kit.
Applicability limit
This sizes an absorbent quantity for a contained liquid. It does not decide whether a release is reportable, it does not classify the waste, and it does not stand in for the emergency response procedure or the safety data sheet. A release of a hazardous substance may trigger a federal response under 40 CFR 300.415, and whether it does is a decision for the responsible official, not for this tool. This is a planning figure for the values entered, not a measured result. Coverage rates, product yields and application rates are properties of a specific product, applicator and substrate, and the label or data sheet for the product you are using always takes precedence over the default here.

What to check

  • Take absorbency from the absorbent product data sheet.
  • Check whether the spilled product is compatible with the absorbent before use.
  • Confirm the bag capacity and the disposal route required for the spilled chemical.
