Reading: what this result means for the job
Actual use is above the standard the budget was built on. A variance this size usually means the standard assumed a coverage rate the site does not achieve, or that the method changed: find which one, because the next budget inherits the same question.
Applicability limit
The variance compares actual consumption with a standard for the same period, and both have to be for the same period and the same scope. A month of actual use against a quarter of standard consumption is not a variance, and neither is a comparison that ignores a product substitution. This is a planning figure for the values entered, not a measured result. Coverage rates, product yields and application rates are properties of a specific product, applicator and substrate, and the label or data sheet for the product you are using always takes precedence over the default here.

What to check

  • Compare the same period against the same period, not against a monthly average.
  • Check whether the standard assumed a coverage rate the site does not achieve.
  • Separate a one-off event from a change in the standard rate.

Variance is the first question to ask when a budget is missed, and the answer is usually in the standard rather than in the person using it. A variance above the standard usually means the standard was wrong: a different applicator, a different coverage rate, or more soil than the standard assumed.
