Sealer Coverage Calculator

Sealer for a porous floor using a separate prime rate and build rate, because a first coat never covers what a second does.

Inputs

Range: 1–1,000,000

Length times width of the area to be cleaned.

Range: 50–10,000 sq ft per gallon

Coverage on the bare, absorbing surface. It is always lower than the build coats, and the data sheet usually quotes both.

Reading: what this result means for the job
A few gallon pails of sealer. Check the absorption of the floor before ordering: on an untested stone the prime coat can take several times the figure entered, and a floor that drinks the prime will drink the build coats too.
Applicability limit
The prime rate and the build rate are separate inputs because a bare, absorbing floor takes far more per square foot on the first coat than on the coats that follow. The prime rate in particular is a guess until the floor is tested for absorption, and a floor with no test will still surprise the estimator. This is a planning figure for the values entered, not a measured result. Coverage rates, product yields and application rates are properties of a specific product, applicator and substrate, and the label or data sheet for the product you are using always takes precedence over the default here. Cost covers the chemical only, at the price entered. It excludes labour, equipment, applicators, consumables, freight, storage, waste disposal and any over-pour that the allowance does not capture.

What to check

  • Read the prime and build coverage rates separately from the data sheet.
  • Check whether the floor has been tested for absorption before the first coat.
  • Confirm the number of build coats the specification requires, not the number on the pail.

Sealer coverage is not one number: a bare, absorbing surface takes far more per square foot than the build coats that follow. The tool keeps the two rates apart, and a floor that is not tested for absorption will still surprise the estimator.
